Hanging cat
Mar. 19th, 2005 09:10 pmOn my way out this afternoon, I saw a beautiful long-haired ebony feline sitting in the backyard of the neighbour's house. She was staring at me, as I stood in the parking lot next to my building, about to unlock the car door. Seeing that I had been noticed, I decided to play with her a bit. "Meow," I called out. The cat continued to stare. I began walking towards her, and she turned, as if readying herself to sprint.
It was at that point I noticed a rope below the cat's paws. At first, I thought that she was just standing on it and it was simply lying in the yard. That assumption was broken when I saw that the rope would move whenever the cat would move. Someone had leashed their cat up in the backyard of their house and left her unattended!
I got in the car and left, marvelling at the sheer stupidity of the situation. If you're going to let your cat roam outdoors, let them roam. Do not tie them up as if they are more aloof versions of dogs, because unlike canines, cats on tethers tend to hang themselves. Better yet, if you really love your cat, keep them indoors.
I was tempted to rescue (read: steal) the neighbour's cat from their backyard and the cruel tether. If I see her out like that again, I just may follow through on my inclination, leaving the neighbours sans a black domestic long hair.
