Anyone reading my journal already knows about Thailand's "Jumbo Queen" competition (and my lust for the participants therein). Well, the Oxygen Network is looking to put on a similar size-positive event stateside, it would seem. Currently, they are auditioning for 10 full-figured women to appear on a reality TV show entitled, "Fat Chance." According to the website, "...Fat Chance is a reality talent show that crowns a full-figured beauty queen. It is a non-judgmental and positive view on women with something extra. The show takes 10 contestants through a beauty boot camp culminating in a beauty pageant. Internal and external beauty is both considered in the judging process." Open castings will be held in New York City, Atlanta and Los Angeles. Personally, I think if they want hot fat girls, they should come right to Pittsburgh or Cleveland. But that's just my opinion...

BUT BUT BUT...

Since "Just My Size" is sponsoring and the person who wins gets to model for them...they are automatically excluding people over a certain size. While JMS has "extended sizes" (meaning 5x, 6x, 7x), most of their clothing only goes to 30/32. Not to mention the stuff they do have for larger sizes is rather basic and drab.

Will we see girls as big as me in this competition? I highly fucking doubt it!

Oh...and you "must be in good physical and mental health" which means that disabled fat chicks are excluded! FUCK THAT!

In an attempt to be level about it, I began thinking that anything not stick-figured be held up as the "gold standard" of beauty on TV was good. Then, it hit me that Oxygen was founded by Oprah Winfrey, queen of weight-loss and the suburban housewife, "you can do it too" attitude. I don't know if she still has controlling interest in the network, but I suspect she has some say so or at least stock options, as it would be financially foolish not to. In any case, throwing her own attitude towards size into the mix along with her support of Dr. Phil (most annoying source of unneeded advice on TV today) who has similar attitudes about girth makes me doubt the whole project.

Judging only by the head shot on the website, Monique (the host) is no rail, but I do agree with your outlook that there is only so far they will go with how fat the woman can be before they are considered "unacceptable" - be it due to the sponsor of the unwritten policies of the network itself. We'll just have to see how this plays out.
