Pink Floyd on Live 8
Jul. 2nd, 2005 07:03 pmSince getting back to
joi_division's place, I've been watching Live 8 on and off. Joi is actually recording it, so we'll be able to zip to the good parts later on. In any case, I caught Pink Floyd's London performance - this, of course, being the Pink Floyd line-up that everyone knew and loved: Nick Mason (drums), Richard Wright (keyboard), David Gilmour (guitar) and Roger Waters (bass).
It's been quite a while since these four men have been on stage together. The last time it happened was in 1980, as Richard Wright was sacked during the recording of The Final Cut. Despite the bitter history, they looked genuinely happy to be playing together again. The setlist was lifted straight from the 70s:
- Breathe/Breathe (reprise) [Dark Side of the Moon 1973]
- Money [Dark Side of the Moon 1973]
- Wish You Were Here [Wish You Were Here 1975]
- Comfortably Numb [The Wall 1979]
Thankfully, Pink Floyd is still in top performing form. They have always been a great band and it's good to see that they haven't lost their touch despite the years.
Unfortunately, during "Comfortably Numb," the talking heads from VH1 interrupted the second verse of the song with so much drivel. This was a quite jarring development in an otherwise happy moment. They cut back for Dave's legendary guitar solo - or half of it, anyhow, before going to commercials. Hopefully we'll be able to get this performance on DVD uninterrupted.
