Dormont has it's village idiot. His name is Gary Young. He decided to write another letter to the newspaper, telling people to switch over to the Republican Party. To this, I reply...
It looks like Gary Young, the Chairman of the Dormont Republican Committee is at it again, sullying the letters pages of the Post-Gazette in an attempt to bring people over to his side ("Join us, the GOP" Thursday, June 23rd, 2005). Of course, it would be helpful if this man didn't have the persuasive powers of a dirty rag. I find it very difficult to take someone seriously when their argument for switching party alignments consists of superficial barbs and outright distortions.
First off, Sen. Richard Durban did not so much "liken American soldiers to Nazis" as he condemned actions being used in American-run prisons that have been used in oppressive regimes, therefore having no place in a democratic society such as ours. As an American, I hold myself to a high standard, one that states that simply because one has been wronged it does not mean that one is entitled to wrong another back indiscriminately or with excessive force. Any true Christian would agree with me on this stance. My suggestion to Gary Young is that he familiarise himself with the New Testament of the Bible as well as the Old. He should also ask himself this question: are we defending the freedoms, liberties and values we hold dear, or are we to become what we claim to be fighting against?
As for Howard Dean, all I can say is this: I greatly admire a democrat who is willing to stand up to right-wing bullies. He has not made being white and Christian an epithet, however he does acknowledge that whites and Christians are not the only human beings populating the United States. And while we're on the subject of demographics, what does Gary Young have against Islamists and Atheists? These people vote as well, and some of them even vote Republican. I dare say that Mr. Young's letter betrays some personal prejudices.
Gary Young is just another sad little Republican trying to increase his party's share through shallow smear campaigns. He is a pathetic shell of a man who can not fathom a point of view which differs from his own. He is a little piece of Rick Santorum or Ann Coulter living right here, close to home ruining the scenery (and possibly lowering property values). It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Mr. Young were to follow in the former's footsteps. This is the party where it isn't okay to be a homosexual, but it is perfectly acceptable to desecrate the corpse of a baby by taking it home and molesting it for a night.
This patriotic Democrat is quite happy with his party affiliation and will continue to do his patriotic duty by voting against lairs, oppressors and blowhards such as Gary Young. Today's Republican party should be ashamed of what it has become. This is not the party of Lincoln or even Teddy Roosevelt. Today's Republican party has lost it's way, the moral compass it claims to hold completely broken. I propose that we abolish using the phrase GOP to mean "grand old party" in relation to today's Republicans. They are an old party, for certain, but there is precious little that is grand about them.
