The Democratic Party: like a phoenix
Nov. 9th, 2005 09:36 pmThe Republicans say not to read too much into it, but denial is an ugly thing indeed: the right-wing is slipping. I'm not so disconnected from reality as to believe that the election results published in today's newspaper spell out the eventual demise of the Republican party, but a fellow can dream, can he not?
The Huffington Post published a nice list of areas where Democrats took an unexpected – and sometimes surprisingly large margin of victory. Of local interest to me was the fact that eight of the nine Republican Dover, Pennsylvania school board members found themselves jobless when the poll results came in. These individuals had been pushing for so-called "intelligent design" to become part of their district's science curriculum. The Democratic challengers who will be replacing them are against such tomfoolery.
Ousting Republicans and putting Democrats in charge – that sounds more like intelligent design to me. Even more local: Democrat Bob O'Connor has been elected as Pittsburgh's next mayor. Let's hope he does better than Tom Murphy.
Of course, all is not as it should be. Editors at the right-wing rag known as The New York Post are creaming themselves over Michael Bloomberg's re-election. Given how liberal the glut of New York City is, this left me scratching my head a bit. However, Gotham moves in strange rhythms and as one who moved out of New York state entirely, what right have I really to complain (at least until I decide to visit the city again)?
Meanwhile, Texas once again proved itself to be the "Lone brain cell" state by approving a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. I guess this will show all those gay Mexican illegal immigrants who sneak into our borders to marry willing homosexuals and gain citizenship!
So, a few ups, a few downs. The next step: voting out all of those right-wingers infecting the legislative branch. That's right, Rick "Fetus-fondler" Santorum: I still have my sites set on you in 2006!
