John Edwards sells out
May. 14th, 2008 07:53 pmThe day after a huge win by Hillary Clinton in West Virginia, which should have served as a wake-up call for the Democrats as to who is more electable, in a daring feat of illogic, John Edwards endorses Barack Obama, the man who got his ass handed to him by the party's base and who will certainly lead the Democrats to general election failure. I wasted no time in contacting Edwards to express how I felt:
I am greatly disappointed by your endorsement of Senator Barack Obama. Frankly, I believe that it is premature for anyone to try to "unify" the party when the primary season is far from over. Hillary Clinton's huge margin of victory proves that Obama would enter the general election with a nearly insurmountable handicap among voters who have traditionally made up the base of the Democratic Party. Furthermore, Clinton's win in West Virginia put her ahead in the popular vote, a position which she initially claimed with her win in Pennsylvania and, up until now, only briefly lost with Senator Obama's win in North Carolina (incidentally, she won the Obama-branded "tie-breaker" state of Indiana).
At one point I considered myself a Democrat who would have supported Barack Obama as the nominee should he win the position over Hillary Clinton (whom I believe is the far stronger candidate). However, I, as well as many others, have found that the more we get to know Barack Obama, the less there is to like about him. His character, his questionable associations, his lack of true leadership moments and the fact that his record is a big blurry question mark make it painfully obvious that Barack Obama is not qualified to be President of the United States. However, what cemented it for that I could not vote for this man was the fact that he is unwilling to exercise patience and wait until the race is truly over, instead picking the date of May 20th to declare victory for himself, regardless of whether or not he has actually clinched the nomination (he hasn't - and won't). I can not, in good faith, support a man who would take an action which reminds me of the pain felt by Democrats across the nation during the 2000 election when George Bush and his cronies derailed efforts to have all of the votes in Florida counted, thus denying Al Gore a victory which was rightly his. That Barack Obama would do anything remotely resembling this makes me sick and it makes it impossible for me to support his presidential bid.
Mr. Edwards, you are a superdelegate, and you have the right and privilege to change your mind any time up until August. I strongly urge you to do the right thing and take back your endorsement of Barack Obama in order to support someone who not only can definitely win the general election, but who has the experience and actual moral integrity to unite the party and lead the nation; that person is Hillary Clinton.
Incidentally, with the addition of West Virginia, Hillary Clinton has squeaked ahead of Barack Obama in the popular vote. The breakdown is Clinton: 16,728,019 (47.69%), Obama 16,710,455 (47.64%), making for a razor-thin lead of .05%. This is shockingly close! However, a lead is a lead and the will of the people should not be denied. Unless mercilessly cut off at the knees (and honestly, given all of the other attempts to knock her out of the race, I wouldn't be surprised if the DNC and the mainstream media conspired Tonya Harding style to club her in the knee), Hillary Clinton should bolster this lead with wins in Kentucky and Puerto Rico. This is not over - and yes, you can expect me to make another donation to the Clinton campaign when I get my paycheque tomorrow just to spite John Edwards.
