George Bush has declared that the United States does not torture. Well, he's right to a point. As a nation, the United States isn't really torturing anybody. The torturing is being done by certain enlisted personnel who happen to be devoid of a moral compass.
It kind of sucks though that, to the tortured, this is the only face of the United States they get to see. So, it is perfectly understandable how they would equate the nation with torture and nothing else. Can't say as I blame them either. If I'd gone to France, and had been dragged off upon setting foot on French soil to find myself locked away and beaten for several months, I wouldn't exactly be all willing to love the blue, white and red, now would I?
That's the funny thing about torture - it colours your perceptions. Now, if only Bush and co. would quit torturing the intelligent citizenry of the nation with constant lies.
