The Boston Globe recently ran an article stating that Snakes on a Plane could be both the best and worst thing to happen to film. Agreed; here is a flick that had it's title, MPAA rating and several snippets of dialog influenced by us geeks who have nothing better to do than sit on our asses writing about the world around us. It's like we've been collectively given a Choose Your Own Adventure book (anybody else remember those?).

So, of course, I want to see the movie - namely because it looks so stupid. The title alone throws me into an uncontrollable giggling fit whenever I read or hear it. It doesn't help that it reminds me of an old Bill Cosby routine - "Chicken Heart" from his 1966 album Wonderfulness - where Bill is recounting tales from his childhood in which his father threatened him with death by poisonous snakes if he got out of his bed in the middle of the night. "If you get out of that bed, they're going to bite you, and you'll swell up and be dead until morning," was the line, if I recall. This results in Bill yelling into the dark, "SNAKES! THIS IS MY ROOM - GET OUT OF HERE! [...] SNAKES! I NEED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM!"

Getting back to Snakes on a Plane, I do plan on seeing the movie. I won't be going opening night (this Thursday), but I should be able to catch it sometime during the weekend (Friday night is out of the question because VAST is playing in Cleveland). I fully expect it to become one of the biggest cult films ever made. Who knows? In a few years, people might go see SoaP and throw rubber reptiles into the theatre aisles at the appropriate scenes. Come to think of it, that wouldn't be a bad idea right now...Snakes in a Theatre!
