Everyday when I go to work, I bring along three albums in an attempt to help pass the time. I try to make sure that these are either good albums or discs that I haven't heard too often, as I usually end up listening to a disc at least three times in the course of a day. This has been multiplied since the mandatory overtime has kicked in and I find myself under the hazy glow of a computer monitor for nearly ten hours each day.

One of the albums I brought today was The Church's 1990 album Gold Afternoon Fix. This happens to be the follow-up to their much acclaimed and best-known Starfish LP. This album doesn't reach the mantle of perfection of it's predecessor, however it has greatly grown on me with time.

In any case, when one is typing in bond applications, one's mind has ample time to wander and focus on other matters. For me, since it is the only other form of stimulus throughout my workday, my mind starts trying to interpret the lyrics to the songs that are playing. One such song which had lyrics that stuck out was a track entitled "Terra Nova Cain," which I now believe is simply a ditty about Marty Wilson-Piper's desire to be seduced by an alien woman. I've tried to glean a deeper meaning from the song, but it just keeps coming back to sex.

Not that I don't like the song, mind you - I actually like it very much, given that sometimes a ditty about being seduced by alien women is just what's needed to "hit" the preverbal spot. It's simply that this song brings to mind images of a post-apocalyptic Earth thousands of years in the future, suddenly interrupted by a great gleaming spaceship. From out of the ship hops the stereotypical shiny spandex-clad space-babe who says, "hey, I dig guitarists." The next thing you know, we're whisked onto the live-action set of The Jetsons.

These are images that rarely come to my mind when listening to The Church. In fact, this is the kind of stuff I'd expect from a Duran Duran song (if not one of their videos). When listening to The Church, desert sunsets and beautiful starscapes usually come to mind. The Church are usually akin to Vincent Van Gogh, as far as my personal visuals related to the music, not Salvatore Dali.

Still, it is a fun song. I just might have to play it this weekend at Ceremony.
