I've come to the conclusion that instant messaging programs are for shit at this point. I can't have a conversation on Yahoo or AIM anymore without it being interrupted or outright lost. I know that it isn't my internet connection because every other net application I have works just fine. My theory is this: in pursuit of more bells and whistles, the makers of instant messaging applications have lost sight of what is important: the text! Why do I need games on AIM, for fuck's sake!

So, consider this a public service announcement: if you're IMing with me and I suddenly disappear, more likely than not it is because my program crapped out, not because I "hung up" on you.

You're not limited to just AOL's sucky client. If you want to use both AIM and Yahoo at the same time, there is Trillian, a free multi-client program, available at http://www.trillian.cc/.

Also, for a only an AIM client with useful features (such as tabbed chat windows and spell check), try Gaim, available at http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php.
