Prank call?
Aug. 31st, 2006 11:25 pmI do not pick up my cell phone if the caller has set it so that I can not see the phone number of the incoming call. I believe that if someone is going to call me, they'd better be forthright with who they are and not try and sneak into a conversation with me. Anything terribly important will be left on a voice mail - which, more often than not, isn't left by anonymous callers. So, when I saw a number on the screen bearing the 412 area code, I figured that this would be pretty safe. Maybe it was someone I knew whose name I'd yet to program into my phone's address book. I pressed the button which has replaced the action of picking up the receiver.
"Mt. Lebanon police," came a shouted reply on the other end, "we're at your front door - open up!"
I was immediately perplexed and a bit alarmed. There had been no banging at the front door - the police aren't known for knocking politely. I looked through the peephole and saw nothing. A prank, I thought and said, "I see no one outside my door."
"We are outside - there's an ambulance in the street - we need access to the building!"
I moved to the front window in the living room and peered out. All was peaceful in the street below. "I see nothing," I said.
"Are you looking out on McFarland?" McFarland Road was the street I used to live on, before
joi_division and I moved in together. "No," I replied and the phone went silent.
