18 lanes of asphalt

"Texas to the environment: get bent" is the basic statement a Reuters article makes about plans to expand Interstate 10 near Houston to become an eighteen lane highway. Yes, 18 - that is not a typo - 18 lanes, or nine in each direction. The article fails to mention whether or not any of these would be HOV lanes, but given the Texan philosophy on development, I seriously doubt it (not that it would make much of a difference anyway).
With atrocities like this happening to regular Interstate highways, is it no wonder that the chosen home of Bush II is the first stop on the NAFTA Freeway, by way of the Trans-Texas Corridor?
